Mets rally late to topple Phillies

Baseball Betting Lines

07/05/2008 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Damion Easley went 3-for-5 and knocked in a run, while Brian Schneider's two-run, pinch-hit double in the eighth inning proved to be the difference as the New York Mets rolled past Philadelphia, 9-4, in the second of four games with the Phillies.

Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado each went 2-for-5 for the Mets, who won for the third time in their last five games. David Wright doubled, while Marlon Anderson and Endy Chavez knocked in a run apiece.

Pedro Feliciano (1-2) earned the win despite recording just one out in relief of John Maine, who allowed three runs on just one hit in 5 2/3 innings before exiting early with an apparent forearm injury.

Ryan Howard belted a three-run homer for the Phillies, who had a four-game win streak snapped. The Phillies were outhit 14-4 for the game.

J.C. Romero (4-2) allowed two runs in one-third of an inning to take the loss behind Jamie Moyer, who held the Mets to three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 frames.

After the Phillies took a 4-3 lead with a run in the seventh, the Mets rallied against the Philadelphia bullpen.

Back-to-back one-out singles off Romero by Easley and Delgado put runners on the corners and brought Tom Gordon on in relief. But Gordon's 1-1 fastball to pinch-hitter Anderson went under catcher Chris Coste's glove and Easley slid in to score the tying run on the wild pitch. Anderson walked, and after pinch- hitter Chavez grounded out, Schneider put the Mets on top with a two-run pinch double to right center. Gordon retired Reyes on a fly ball to left, but the Mets had turned a one-run deficit into a two-run lead.

After Duaner Sanchez tossed a scoreless eighth, the Mets put the game away with three runs against Rudy Seanez in the ninth. Seanez's error on a Carlos Beltran grounder allowed one run to score, while a bases-loaded groundout by Anderson and an RBI single by Chavez upped the lead to 9-4.

Tony Armas worked a perfect ninth to finish off the win.

Reyes scored on Wright's double play to give the Mets a 1-0 lead in the first, and New York tacked on two more in the fourth. With Wright on third and Beltran at first, Moyer seemingly had Beltran picked off between first and second. But Howard's throw to second sailed into left field as Wright scored, and Easley plated Beltran with a single.

Maine retired the first 10 batters he faced before a hit batter and a walk put two runners on with two outs in the fourth. Howard then made the Phillies' first hit of the game a meaningful one, as he tied the game with a line drive blast to left.

After Ryan Madson bailed Moyer out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh, the Phillies pulled ahead in the bottom half. With runners on first and second with two outs, Jayson Werth ripped a single to left off Feliciano that brought home Eric Bruntlett. But Werth was caught trying to reach second on the throw to put an end to the rally.

Game Notes

Maine left the game with a 2-2 count to Howard after clutching his left (non- throwing) forearm just below the elbow on two straight pitches. Aaron Heilman came on in relief and only had to throw one pitch to complete the strikeout of Howard...The Mets were 4-for-12 with runners in scoring position, while the Phillies went 2-for-4...Moyer has lasted at least six innings in all 17 of his career starts against the Mets.

FOOTBALL TRASH TALK

NFL Football Trash Talk

Trash talk has a place in every competitive endeavor (except baseball; those stirrup-wearers are too busy chewing on their sunflower seeds and their “supplements” to worry about what their opponents are doing).

Fantasy sports is no exception. Any intelligent discussion of the subject would probably start with a thesis statement or a definition of terms. Thankfully, this won’t be an intelligent discussion.

Let me just say that I am happy to take a place in this space alongside my talented colleagues, even our commissioner. (You should see how she bleats like a demented paper boy about league fees on our fantasy site).

Trash talking, I would argue, is primarily about amusing your friends, their sheeplike demeanors and sloping foreheads notwithstanding. The best place I have found for football trash talking is at www.SportsAlarm.com.

Beyond the entertainment factor, though, I would recognize that the sophomoric ritual has one advantage, when properly applied. It magnifies your fantasy triumphs and mitigates your fantasy failures by transforming the eventual point total into an afterthought. Winning makes it seem like your opponent really is a “truss-owning, lapel-pin-wearing nitwit.” And in defeat, trash talk can be the air bag to break the fall from your hyperbolic heights. “The plug-necked yahoos on your team,” you can say, “will be sacking groceries by the end of the season.”

The best trash talk, in my view, is layered and nuanced. And it doesn’t focus only on your opponent’s team. It picks apart your opponent. The idea is to create a shock-and-awe-scale blizzard of nonsense, and the goal is to make your opponent drop his hands from his keyboard in exasperation.

What team does your opponent root for? Accuse a Giants fan of having a Joe Namath pillowcase. Where’s your opponent from? Give a look of concern no matter his reply, then say, “I’ll try to type slower for you next time.” Is your opponent into politics? Label everyone a tax-and-spend corporate shill.

Cap all that with a liberal application of irrelevance. For instance, don’t just conclude by saying your opponent is a “twerp who drafts like my grandmother.” Say that your opponent is a “sweater-wearing, eyebrow-plucking twerp who drafts his team about as well as Zsa Zsa Gabor gave acceptance speeches at the Oscars.” By the time your foe makes sense of that, his starting running back will have had puppies.

But what about you? Hmm? Recall a memorable slam? Have a tried-and-true technique? Know someone who seems impervious to insult? Take a moment and tells us about it. Put together some (fit-for-publication) thoughts. You won’t be too busy returning phone messages from your friends, I’m sure, to reply.

In addition to the trash talking, the Sports Alarm has a huge gallery of high resolution pictures of beautiful women and models in bikinis. The most popular models are: Lindsay Lohan, Carrie Underwood, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Paris Hilton.

MySportsbook.com refunds all bets on Oakland, Green Bay and Tampa Bay from NFL week one.

(September 14) – Week one of NFL action saw three teams go scoreless for the first time since 1977.  Another four were unable to get a touchdown and almost half of the underdogs covered the spread. Those three teams saved bettors at MySportsbook.com from losing out completely, thanks to the company’s unique NFL Shutout Rule -- which ensures that if the team you backed goes scoreless, your wager is refunded.

Sportsbook refunded tens of thousands of dollars to customers who bet on Oakland, Green Bay and Tampa Bay, the three teams that stunk up the field so badly that their fans and backers never had a chance to get up from their couches and cheer.  In the spirit of the low scoring start to the season, odds makers at the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino have set odds on how many total shutouts there will be this season.

MySportsbook.com has posted updated sports betting lines for week two of the season.  Ben Roethlisberger’s health status is still questionable, so Willie Parker will try to lead Pittsburgh again as they travel to Jacksonville as a one point favorite.  After beating up on his little brother last week, Peyton Manning will look to lead the Colts to victory against Houston. Indianapolis is a whopping 13.5 favorite in the match-up.

Seattle, last year’s highest scoring team, showed the power of their defense with their gritty 9-6 win in Motown over the ravenous Lions.  They take their act back home to the comforts of Qwest Field where they will face the resurgent Arizona Cardinals.  The Seahawks are favored by a touchdown.
