Birmingham hands O'Connor new deal

07/13/2010 - Birmingham, England (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Birmingham City striker Garry O'Connor has signed a new short-term contract with Alex McLeish's side.

The 27-year-old Scotland international, who has endured an injury-ravaged recent spell with the club, has penned a six-month contract with the option of a further six months.

O'Connor endured double hip operations last season that forced the former Hibernian star to miss most of the campaign.

McLeish said: "Garry's had a chronic groin and hip injury and it probably goes back to his Hibs days and the days he spent in Russia when he played on a synthetic surface. Having two hip injuries simultaneously wasn't easy for him.

"If you imagine him fully-fit without those problems then that's what we've got to see - what Garry can produce without these hiccups. Successful operation and barring major breakdown there's no reason why he can't go on to have a successful career."

O'Connor has found the net 11 times in 26 starts and 30 substitute appearances for the Blues since arriving at the club from Lokomotiv Moscow three years ago.

Colts give the ‘D’ its due

The Indianapolis Colts know that winning the Super Bowl last season put a huge target on their backs, and they expect opponents to go all-out to knock them from the top of the mountain.

They’ll get their first test from the New Orleans Saints this Thursday night. The defending champs had nothing but good things to say about the New Orleans defense this past week, praising their opponents’ pass rush and run-stopping abilities.

"They play very aggressively," head coach Tony Dungy told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "They play a lot of man-to-man coverage, and they come after you. They have good pass rushers, and they're going to try to pressure us, I'm sure."

Both center Jeff Saturday and quarterback Peyton Manning gave New Orleans’ front four props, admitting keeping guys like Will Smithand Charles Grant contained would be a tall task for the offensive line.

New Orleans ranked second in total defense during the preseason at a sportsbook, allowing just under 233 yards per game. Last season, the defense finished 11th in the league after giving up 307.3 yards and 20.1 points per contest.

Not so sound on the ground

Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
