Bears host Aztecs in intriguing early matchup

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

11/15/2011 - Waco, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Two undefeated teams clash in Waco this afternoon, as the 11th-ranked Baylor Bears play host to the San Diego State Aztecs at the Ferrell Center.

Steve Fisher's Aztecs entered this season with a great deal of momentum, coming off a huge 2010-11 campaign in which the team racked up 34 victories, captured the Mountain West Conference title and finished the year ranked sixth in the top-25. SDSU has gotten off to a fast start this season with three resounding wins as host of the Basketball Traveler's Classic, beating Bryant, Southern Utah and most recently, UC Davis (89-74).

Scott Drew's Bears have also enjoyed home cooking early on, knocking off both Texas Southern (77-57) and Jackson State (92-59) in the friendly confines of the Ferrell Center. One of the favorites in the Big 12 this season, Baylor won't even venture out of Waco until a December 4th game at Northwestern.

This is the fifth meeting between these two teams. San Diego State has won three of the previous four matchups, but it was Baylor that got in the win column in the last encounter, a 76-62 win in 2009.

Jamal Franklin came off the bench to pour in a career-high 31 points, leading the Aztecs to a rousing 15-point victory over UC Davis last time out. Franklin was a solid 10-of-17 from the floor, including 4-7 from behind the arc. Chase Tapley also found his groove, hitting 7-of-11 shots, including four three- pointers en route to a 23-point effort. LaBradford Franklin chipped in with 13 points, as SDSU converted half of its shots in the game (28-of-56), including 10-of-19 from three-point range. Thus far, Franklin and Tapley have been a dynamic one-two punch. Franklin is now averaging 22.0 ppg in two outings, while Tapley is netting 19.7 in three games. Depth is found in LaBradford Franklin (10.0 ppg), Garrett Green (9.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg) and Xavier Thames (9.3 ppg, team-high 22 assists).

Baylor has certainly shown the offensive proficiency to hang with any team early on. In the 92-point outburst against Jackson State, four Bears finished in double figures, led by freshman Quincy Miller's 17 points. Quincy Acy added 14 points to the cause, while Cory Jefferson and Anthony Jones checked in with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Baylor showed its superiority at the defensive end as well, forcing 19 turnovers and holding Jackson State to a mere 30.2 percent shooting. Miller has made an immediate impact on this team, shooting .478 from the floor and netting 17.0 ppg over two outings. Acy adds 12.5 ppg, with Joseph (11.5 ppg) and Jones (11.0 ppg) rounding out the depth. Jefferson (9.5 rpg) and Jones (8.5 rpg) have dominated the first two opponents on the glass, hauling in a combined 36 boards.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .

''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''

Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.

He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.

''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''

Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
